On June 1st at 7pm, Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky has a recital at Koerner Hall singing works by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Medtner and Liszt. Ivari Ilja will accompany on piano.
Brian Current’s new opera Airline Icarus will open at 8pm on June 3rd at Ada Slaight Hall in the Daniels Spectrum complex. The piece stars Krisztina Szabó and Alexander Dobson, among others. Tim Albery directs. The show runs until June 8th. Tickets are $20-$75 and are available here.
Juliet Palmer’s Shelter opens at the Berkeley Street Theatre on June 12th at 7.30pm. The cast includes Christine Duncan, Teiya Kasahara, Andrea Ludwig, Keith Klassen and Peter McGillivray. Keith Turnbull directs and Leslie Dala conducts. This show runs until the 15th and tickets can be had here.
Against the Grain Theatre’s much anticipated Pelléas et Mélisande opens on June 19th with further shows on the 21st, 23rd and 25th. This one is being staged in the garden behind the COC offices which is quite charming though tricky to find. (I lived 2 minutes walk away for over 10 years before finding it) The cast includes Étienne Dupuis, Miriam Khalil, Gregory Dahl, Alain Coulombe, Megan Latham and Andrea Núñez. Finally, not exactly a performance but on Sunday June 8th, opera director Peter Stein and Alexander Neef, General Director of the Canadian Opera Company will be at the TIFF Bell Lightbox to look back at Stein’s four-decade career and screen highlights of his productions of Pelléas et Mélisande, Moses und Aron, and Die Nase. The event is part of “Celebrating Peter Stein,” a five-day celebration of Stein as he is awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Toronto.
