A few announcements

danikaSo there’s another new approach to art song in Toronto.  Collectìf is a new group “dedicated to exploring and expanding the world of art song performance and presenting innovative, song-based theatre”.  The people behind this one, Danikà Loren, Whitney O’Hearne and Jennifer Krabbe, are young and very talented.  They have a show on December 14th and 15th at Loft404’s B-Lounge.  It’s called Le Rossignol et la Rose.  We are promised Oscar Wilde and the underground nightlife of 1930s Paris.  I shall go with a seriously depressed student and try not to pin my hand to a table with a knife.

On a more conventional and Christmassy note, vocal quintet The Calmus Ensemble are performing pieces from their CD Christmas Carols of the World at Walter Hall on the 13th.  The main event is at 3.15pm but there is an interactive performance for young people at 1.15pm too.  Tickets here.

And also in the holiday vein No Strings Theatre are doing Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors directed by Denise Williams.  The cast includes  Will Trigo-Ebere in the title role plus Denise Williams, Erin Armstrong, Mikhail Bukhman, Kurtis Whittle, Norman Brown, Lawrence Cotton, George Ossipov, Andrew Tam and Ron Jewel.  Music direction is by William Shookhoff. It will be followed by a concert of jazz and gospel by artists – including singer, songwriter and actor Kate Suhr, and jazz gospel veteran Nicole Brooks, creator and composer of Obeah Opera.  This one is at the Wychwood Barns on December 20th with shows at 3pm and 7pm.

Finally, December 17th to 19th at the Enoch Turner Schoolhouse at 8pm, Toronto Masque Theatre are presenting Dean Burry’s The Mummers Masque: A Newfoundland Christmas Kitchen Party.  This is your big chance to see Carla Huhtahnen slaying dragons and rescuing princesses plus Dean’s Ugly Stick (not a euphemism).  Tickets here.
