Here’s a round up of news and announcements from my mail box.
April 8th, at Roy Thomson Hall at 8pm, Show One productions have a show with the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, soprano Hibla Gerzmava and cellist Daniella Akta in a varied program including Mozart’s Divertimento No.1 in D major, K. 136, Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony in C minor Op. 110 and arias from Norma, I Masnadieri, and Adriana Lecouvreur.
Monday, May 1st at 7.30pm in the atrium at 21 Shaftesbury Avenue, Toronto Masque Theatre are doing a staged reading of Ben Jonson’s The Vision of Delight with music by Shannon Mercer, Larry Beckwith and Ben Stein.
On May 2nd at Koerner Hall at 8pm, Natalie Dessay is appearing with with Philippe Cassard in a program titled Women’s Portraits, featuring arias from Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and Die Zauberflöte, and Gounod’s Faust, as well as pieces by Schubert, Pfitzner, Chausson, Bizet, and Debussy.
Looking further out, Soundstreams have announced their 35th season. The main stage series features five shows: Northern Encounters, with music and dance from Canada and Finland performed by the Lapland Chamber Orchestra; Musik für das Ende, which is an immersive experience of Québécois composer Claude Vivier’s work; Tan Dun’s Water Passion after St. Matthew, a contemporary reimagining of Bach; Freddy’s Tune, featuring cross-genre inspirations from the famous theme King Frederick gifted to Bach; and The Little Match Girl Passion, thePulitzer Prize-winning work by David Lang. Also, a rather unusual performance by Opera by Request. To celebrate their 10th anniversary they are putting on a semi-staged version of Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier in a chamber orchestra reduction. It’s on June 9th and 10th at 6.30pm at the Church of the Redeemer (162 Bloor Street West). The cast includes Katherine Dain as the Marschallin, Barbara King as Octavian, Danielle Dudycha as Sophie and Uwe Dambruch as Ochs. Full details at obr10.ca
Last but not least, Ben McAteer won the Best Opera Performance Award at the MyTheatre Awards for his performance in Stuart MacRae’s The Devil Inside beating out such luminaries as Jane Archibald, Erin Wall, Sondra Radvanovsky and Christine Goerke.
